Low thyroid and weight gain problems are very common...



Low thyroid problems can cause weight gain and make it difficult to lose weight. It’s very common, especially in women. The thyroid gland sends chemical messages to burn fat in order to stay warm and maintain core temperature.

Symptoms include weight gain, fatigue, depression, cold hands and feet, and dry skin.

To find out if you have a low thyroid, check your temperature with a thermometer under your armpit first thing in the morning before getting out of bed.

Your thyroid will need help if it is consistently lower than normal. There are nutritional supplements and herbs that help support thyroid glandular and nutrients to the thyroid function such as black walnut.

If lab test show normal levels of thyroid hormones while you are showing signs of low thyroid, you may want to have the conversion of T4 (the inactive form of thyroid hormone) to T3 (the active form). A metabolite of DHEA can be helpful, it increases the conversion of T4 to T3 (increases metabolic rate and fat metabolism). Toxicity and inflammation can contribute to weight gain. Toxins cause inflammation and fluid retention in the tissues.

Our body can’t break down most toxins that we are exposed to because they are fat soluble. Cholesterol levels increase to transport the toxins to our fat.

Stress- there is plenty of research showing stress contributes to weight gain. Stress promotes the release of cortisol which is a hormone from the adrenals. Cortisol is a chemical messenger that causes the body to break down proteins for energy and carbohydrates to store as fat (especially in the stomach area). It is also released when there is chronic inflammation. Stress can decrease muscle mass and increase the depositing of fat.

Exercise and muscle building can increase muscle mass (as we get older we can lose muscle mass easier) and decrease fat storing even when we are not working out (muscles keep metabolism up).

Also, herbs, supplements and exercise help reduce the output of cortisol, lower stress levels, boost metabolism and boost mood. Antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties help reduce cortisol output and it also reduces inflammation to increase metabolism and help leptin (a fat burning hormone) work better.

Food Cravings- I feel like I crave certain foods because my body is missing nutrients. For instance, chocolate, you could need magnesium, an orange, you could need vitamin C.

Nutritional supplements stop the food cravings for me because my body is getting the nutrients that it needs to function properly every day. Sugar craving is a sign of blood sugar problems and the diet is lacking fat and protein. I use healthier forms of sweets like xylitol-sweetened dark chocolate bars, gums and mints. It does not spike blood sugars and lead to weight gain. Xylitol is helpful with teeth and gums and healthy bacteria. It is safe for diabetics.

I do not use the artificial sugars, I don’t believe they are good for you. A healthy lifestyle can slow and even stop low thyroid symptoms.
